Commercial quality, larger-capacity presses: Whether you have a few apple trees or a larger orchard or vineyard, the Maximizer provides the top quality construction and superior design features you need. To call the Maxmizer's construction stout would be an understatement... this is the Sherman Tank of fruit presses. Its frame has the strength to withstand tremendous pressure, and the acme-threaded forcing screw and solid ratchet mechanism make it easy to create that pressure. (The forcing screw is 1" diameter on the 5.3 gallon model & 1-1/4" diameter for the 9.5 gallon model.) If you'll be using your fruit press for apples, you can get much more juice from your apples if you grind them first, before pressing. Our exclusive Maximizer™ apple grinder uses stainless steel teeth set into a large hardwood rotor. It has a plate and holes for mounting to your sawhorse or similar support. Some people prefer to grind into a bucket and dump into press, others prefer to mount the grinder higher and grind directly into the pressing basket. Mounting so you can grind into a bucket allows one person to press while another grinds, speeding up the whole operation. The grinder is self-feeding, so you don't need to push apples downward.

Maple Creek™ Do-It-Yourself Press Parts

These stout components are the key items you need to build your own heavy duty wine press or apple press. The 1.5" diameter screw has 13.25" of travel; it's made of high strength steel and has an acme thread. Overall width of the massive cast iron beam is 16-15/16", and when dadoed into your vertical press posts, width between your posts will be 16". The ends of the cross beam measure 2-15/16" square. The bolt holes in the beam are 13/32" to accept your 3/8" bolts. The cast iron foot swivels on the end of the steel forcing screw, and has a diameter of 3-3/4". The top-mounted cast iron wheel is securely keyed to the acme screw shaft and has a diameter of 6-3/4". Kingpins measure 2" tall; they taper from 1" at root to 13/16" at top and accept a turning pole (handle) up to 2-3/4" wide. (A single shorter pole can be used by one person, or two can operate a longer pole that extends both directions.) The basket hoops measure 1/8" x 3/4" x 13-1/2" inside diameter, and each has 26 holes x 3/16". Everything included is pictured; this set doesn't include frame plans.

When planning your frame, remember the "equal and opposite reaction" principle. The cross beam you build under the bottom pan of your press needs to be strong enough to withstand the pressing force you'll apply.

The beam, top wheel and foot are primer coated black. Net combined weight of the beam, screw assembly and hoops is 35 lbs. Maple Creek™ press parts are guaranteed by Pleasant Hill Grain against defects in materials and workmanship for 1 year.

As with any fruit press, to get good juice yield from apples you need to pulp them first. Our Maximizer™ apple grinder is ideal for that task.

These comfortable & durable fruit harvesting bags are constructed of waterproof Cordura nylon that's resistant to mold, mildew and abrasion and has a strong steel upper frame and leather edge protector. They're excellent for any type of fruit and have 2" wide, adjustable straps and an 8" x 14" padded suede cushion extending down from rear edge of top opening that protects both the picker and the fruit. The draw ropes are adjustable for bag depth and unhook easily to empty fruit through bottom. Two sizes are available. Top opening of each measures 9" x 18". The medium bag (color blue) holds one bushel (42 lbs.) of apples. Its opened length is 28". The larger bag (green color) holds 1-1/3 bushel and has an opened length of 34". Mesh Press Basket Liner Bags

These high strength pressing bags have holes approximately 1/16" and keep pulp from squeezing out between basket slats. Without mesh, when you reach a moderate pressure level, pulp will actually start shooting out between the slats. That causes some product loss of course, but that's a minor issue. The bigger issue is that from that point on, even if you continue turning the pressing screw down, you won't actually be increasing the pressure on the pulp in the press, because you've reached the point where it's easier for the pulp to exit between the slats and it will just continue to do that. The result of this "pressure relief valve" action is that you leave a lot of juice in the pulp instead of extracting it as you want to. Using a mesh bag stops pulp from escaping through the slats, so continued downward pressing actually increases the pressure in the pulp below—and juice keeps flowing out! Disposable cotton cheesecloth is the traditional material to use for this purpose, but these mesh bags are much handier and they're very durable; one bag will last more than a season in normal use. They also speed the pressing process. Size is 15" diameter x 20" tall and easily fits pressing baskets of smaller dimensions. We recommend getting two or three in case one gets torn by a twig in the pulp, chewed by a critter in the off season, etc.
