Baby's First Foods takes the guesswork out of preparing fresh, inexpensive baby foods from real, whole foods. Even if you are experienced with whole-foods cooking, your new-mommy brain, which is likely operating on little sleep, will appreciate that so much of the work is done for you! Specific cooking times are provided for a number of grains, fruits, and vegetables. A full two months' worth of menus for baby is included, which accounts for introducing one new food at a time.
If whole-foods cooking is new to you, you will benefit even more greatly from Theresa Powers' text. You will find instructions for baking bread, as well as tasty recipes to prepare for breakfast, dinner, and snacks. Those of you new to holiday entertaining will find the holiday meal instructions beneficial. In dessert or similar recipes, raw or less-refined sugar is substituted for white, as a healthier option.
The last section of the book contains additional projects to benefit new mothers and babies in areas outside of the kitchen. There are sewing projects, herbal formulas, and journal-keeping guidelines.
Baby's First Foods makes a wonderful gift for young mothers — one that will enrich their lives and the lives of their children for many years to come as they enjoy the benefits of good health produced by sound nutrition. It makes a good addition to whole-foods cookbook collections, with its specific cooking instructions and yummy recipes. It would even be a good option for inclusion in a hope chest! Hardback, 128 pages.
