The Berkey® purification system removes pathogenic bacteria, cysts and parasites while extracting chemicals including herbicides, pesticides, organic solvents, VOCs, detergents, cloudiness, silt, sediment, foul tastes and odors. The unique design of Black Burkey® purifier elements combines the age-old process of micro-porous filtration coupled with modern state-of-the-art technology and the highest quality materials to bring you the finest water purification system available anywhere. The micro-pores within the self-sterilizing and re-cleanable Black Berkey® purification elements are so incredibly small that pathogenic bacteria are simply not able to pass through them.

The media within Black Burkey® elements removes contaminants by a surface phenomenon known as “adsorption” which results from the molecular attraction of substances to the surface of the media. The exclusive purification elements are also impregnated with proprietary media that promote ionic “absorption” of pollutants within the micro-porous elements. Another reason Burkey® systems are so effective in removing contaminants from water is the extremely long “contact period.” Other filtration systems rely on water pressure that forces water molecules through the filters at 60-90 PSI. In such systems, individual water molecules come in contact with the filter media for a mere fraction of a second. Water molecules passing through the revolutionary micro-pore structure of the Black Burkey® purification elements are drawn gently by gravity and stay in contact with the media for several minutes. This makes the Black Burkey® filter media much more efficient in capturing contaminants.

The dramatic superiority of Burkey® water purifiers is illustrated very graphically in the photograph at left. This image shows the upper (pre-treated) section of the Berkey Light® purifier about half full of water containing food coloring. In the lower (purified water) section, which is also about half full, you see clear, uncolored water. The Berkey® purifier's ability to achieve this level of contaminant separation shows demonstrates how strikingly superior Berkey® performance is compared to other purifiers. When bacteria are viewed under a powerful microscope, food coloring is often used as a contrast enhancer to make the bacteria easier to see. Even under magnification sufficient to show the detail in a single bacterium, food coloring still appears only as solid, uniform coloration. Yet the Berkey Light®, as shown here, actually mechanically removes the food coloring from the water — the Berkey® is the only filter system in the world that can do this. And, just as importantly, the beneficial minerals essential to maintain good health are left in the water for your body to use.

Berkey® Purifiers are available in several configurations. All Berkey® Systems using Black Berkey® purifying elements meet or exceed the EPA's stringent "7 Log" (99.99999%) contaminant reduction specification. Systems using Black Berkey® elements within transparent Lexan® housings are known as Berkey Light® Purifiers. Systems using Black Berkey® elements within stainless steel housings have the same purifying performance, and are known as Berkey® Stainless Purifiers. The Berkie Light® System is the newest development in Berkie water purification. Shell construction is 50-mil thick Lexan® polycarbonate, the material used to make bulletproof glass and industrial safety face shields. Every Berkie Light® has a capacity of 2.75 gallons, can accept two purifying elements, and comes equipped with two Black Berkie® purifying elements. The Berkie Light® purification process is gravity driven, requiring no electricity or water pressure. This makes Berkie® systems completely and easily portable.

Standard Berkey Light® Model: The standard Berkey Light® is non-illuminated. Its Lexan® polycarbonate shell is incredibly tough, yet lightweight compared to similarly sized purifiers made of other materials.

Two Illuminated Models: In addition to the standard model, the Berkey Light® is available in two models that offer LED illumination in either white or cobalt blue color. "LED" stands for "Light Emitting Diode"; LEDs are solid state lamps that have no filaments to break. Their power consumption is extremely low, and life span averages 100,000 hours — more than 11 years of continuous use. Water purification performance is identical for all three Berkey Light® models. The LED-equipped models provide illumination that guides users to the water supply at night when other lighting isn't available, and also provide area lighting that's bright enough for reading near the purifier (the white is much brighter than the blue.) The LED lamps can be powered by several means. An AC adapter (included) can be used when 120V AC current is available. Rechargeable internal batteries, also included, will operate the LEDs all night on a single charge from the AC adapter. An auxiliary battery adapter (optional) is available and will power the LED base 8 hours per night for a two full weeks on 4 AA alkaline batteries. And an optional solar charger with internal NiMH battery set also can be used to power and/or recharge the LED base as well as most other battery powered devices you use, which beats the cost of any conventional batteries even when purchased at a deep discount.

Unequalled Effectiveness: Berkey® purifiers using the Black Berkey® purification elements are proven to reduce pathogenic bacteria (including E. Coli, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Giardia and Cryptosporidium) by 99.99999%. The Berkey Light® System has been tested with the highest pathogenic contamination levels that can be produced in a laboratory. When contamination levels exceed one billion pathogens per liter of water (10,000 times the density of contamination used in the standard test protocol for bacteriological removal) they're classified as "TNTC" (too numerous to count.) Under normal testing protocol, one pathogenic organism is tested at a time, each with a fresh purifying element. For this test, however, the laboratory was directed to combine three separate pathogenic TNTC cultures. Tested under this extreme contamination level, absolutely no pathogens were able to make it through the purification elements. The laboratory then incubated the water, and nothing grew. When the filtered water was viewed under an electron microscope not even in-viable (dead) microbes were detectable — nothing was present but pure H2O. Furthermore, contaminants reduced to below-detectable-limits include Trihalomethanes, Radon 222, and volatile organic compounds including Benzene, 2,4-D, Heptachlor, MTBE, Styrene, Tetrachloroethylene and Toulene, among many others.

Crown Berkey® Capacity & Flow Rate: The Crown is the largest Berkey® system. It comes equipped with two Black Berkey® purifying elements, and can accept a maximum of eight elements. Lower storage tank capacity is 6 gallons. Flow rate is 6.5 gallons per hour with two elements. The Crown Berkey® system, when configured with eight Black Berkey® purification elements, can purify up to 650 gallons per day (~27 gallons per hour) when the upper chamber is full. This is enough to provide for up to 325 people on a sustained basis and up to 1300 people on a short-term emergency basis.

Big Berkey® Capacity & Flow Rate: The Big Berkey® is the fourth-largest Berkey® system. It comes equipped with two Black Berkey® purifying elements, and can accept a maximum of four elements. Lower storage tank capacity is 2.25 gallons. Flow rate is 4 gallons per hour with two elements. The Big Berkey® system, when configured with four Black Berkey® purification elements, can purify up to 190 gallons per day (~8 gallons per hour) when the upper chamber is full. Along with the Royal Berkey®, the Big Berkey® is one of our most popular Berkefeld water purifiers.
